Jusoor

Country: Lebanon

Jusoor’s refugee education program, offered in three centres in Lebanon – Beirut, Jeb Jenin, and Jurahiya – has supported thousands of Syrian refugee children and youth through a series of learning tracks: an early childhood program for ages three to five; a bridge into school, for ages six to twelve; a weekend homework club for children enrolled in the Lebanese school system; and preparation for Lebanon’s standardized testing for teenagers.

Lebanon’s COVID-19 lockdown required Jusoor to close their learning centres in March 2020. In response, the team rolled out a remote learning program within a week and a half from the start of Lebanon’s lockdown. Called Azima (in English, “determined”), the program delivers curriculum and assignments directly to children in their homes through WhatsApp and paper booklets. Children can watch video lessons and complete assignments on paper or by a voice memo. Jusoor also helped address other urgent needs arising from the pandemic by providing children and their families with virtual counseling services and by delivering hampers of food and cleaning supplies.
