Remote Schooling in Ecuador’s Andean Highlands
Country: Ecuador
Mr. Ilaquiche is Superintendent of Schools of the Guangaje district in Ecuador’s Andean Highlands. This district is composed of 34 villages populated by about 7,000 indigenous Quechua people.
When schools were closed to slow the spread of the virus, there were still two months left in the school year. The Ministry of Education instituted a curriculum of remote, online learning. However, that curriculum was designed for children in households with continuous internet access. In Guangaje, only 2% of families in the district have computers, and 70% of students do not have regular internet in their homes.
In response to these challenges, Mr. Ilaquiche led the adaptation of schooling under a remote delivery model tailored to the needs and circumstances of the district’s communities.
